A church that welcomes families

Three of the gospels record the disciples arguing about ‘who was the greatest’. In response, Jesus invites a child to join them, not to receive instruction, but as a clue to their question, “Whoever receives one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.” (Mark 9:27)

At Canberra Baptist Church we welcome and encourage the participation of all people – and of all ages – because we know we learn about God from each other.

What happens on Sundays for kids?

Our Sunday services (9am and 10:30am) follow a pattern each week of gathering together, hearing God’s word and responding to that word with prayer and action.

At the 10:30, ‘hearing God’s word’ starts with a conversation with the children, after which they, and the youth, move to crèche (for ages 0-3), CBKids (pre-school to year 6), and CBYouth (high school)

  • Crèche is in the crèche room, Waldock Hall. Feel free to leave your children and go back to church. The coordinator or parent helper will collect you if necessary.
  • CBKids meet in the McMaster Lounge. After a welcome and songs, we form smaller groups; pre-school move to the back of the church and K-6 remain in the Lounge.
  • CBYouth meets in the Youth Room at the back of the church.

What other activities are held?

Canberra Baptist Church has an energetic Family Committee which meets to plan a range of social activities to enable families to meet and make friends; bike rides, bush walks, dinners for parents (with babysitting provided) and picnics.

Two of the highlights of our year are Church Camp, a gathering in tents and cabins at the coast, and Dads’ and Kids’ Camp, an action-packed opportunity for dads and kids to build great relationships while exploring the ACT’s beautiful wilderness areas.

From time to time the church also offers parenting and marriage seminars.

Are there Bible Study groups for families?

Currently there is a small group meeting fortnightly for a meal and Bible Study on Saturday evenings. There are also small Bible Study intensives during the year.
