Sunday-to-Sunday: 1st – 7th May

I’m reading Romans. ‘Present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.’ And ‘for all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption.’ Read more…

Sunday-to-Sunday: 26 March to 2 April

I am still fascinated by the name – Righteous Lazarus, the Four Days Dead! If you missed last Sunday’s service, this is how Lazarus of Bethany (John 11:1-45) is known in the Eastern Orthodox Church. I confess, when I first heard the name, I was reminded of the 1987 film, The Princess Bride. Apologies to you who haven’t seen it or who aren’t fans (Inconceivable!), but there’s a wonderful scene where the ‘miracle worker’ Miracle Max says, “It just so Read more…

Being a healthy church is, “not rocket science… You preach the gospel, offer hospitality, and pay attention to worship and people’s spiritual lives, Frankly, you take Christianity seriously as a way of life.” I keep coming back to this quote from Christianity for the Rest of Us (the book we explored in depth several years ago, which laid the groundwork for the formation of our church goals). It is a great reassurance when I start to feel like the task Read more…

On the shoulders of giants…. As part of the process of naming CBC’s strengths, I’ve been reading much of its history. There are so many books and articles that contain so much information about the life and mission of this church. It’s wonderful to read of the dedication and commitment that so many have given. We do indeed stand on the shoulders of giants! We are in a process of naming our strengths. We are currently in the stage of seeking to name the Read more…

Sunday-to-Sunday: 28 February to 5 March

Dear Friends, Thank you to all those who helped to make last Sunday’s 94th Anniversary Service such a wonderful occasion! I appreciated Rev Phil Waugh’s words – very relevant and very challenging – and the beautiful music from Kelly Tsang and Desmond Tan and the choir, and the special morning tea, coordinated by Anneke Blackburn. It was a wonderful celebration, and it was followed by a significant church meeting in the life of this church as we work out together Read more…

Sunday-to-Sunday: Ecumenical Service marking the commencement of the Parliamentary Year

On Monday, bright and early at 7:30am, St Paul’s Manuka hosted the Ecumenical Service marking the commencement of the Parliamentary Year. Ciru Nganga, from Canberra Baptist Church, was one of the young people who prayed for our nation and politicians, and she did a brilliant job! The text of her prayer is at the bottom of this email. Rev Dr Sarah Bachelard, Spiritual Director of Benedictus Contemplative Church, spoke, and she was also brilliant. These last two weeks, we have Read more…
